According to many sources, the internetz will run out of IPv4 addresses in less than a year.
You're probably asking, well, why the fuck do I care?
Because, 90% of the internet runs on ipv4. ipv6, which is a new version of addressing, hasnt been integrated, fully.
You see, a normal IP address is shown like so: x.x.x.x
An IPv6 address, is shown like so: x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x (its actually colons in between, but this forum changes it to hearts. )
The reason why IP addresses are being gobbled up so quickly, is because there is only 3706.65 million usable addresses
There are cellphones and computers alike using up IP addresses.
Websites use them too, because a website, is actually a server. Like a game server. Its a computer with information accessible to anyone who has the permission to do so. You can create your own free website if you know how to code. But your website will have to go by IP address if you want it to be free. You have to pay for a domain name, or a website address.
Most websites out there have their servers with ipv4 addresses. To switch over, the websites would have to shut down, and re-configure with the new IP addresses. It's not that simple.
Luckily for ordinary users, you already have an IPv6 address if you are running windows xp and later. To find your ipv6 address, open a command prompt, and type ipconfig /all
You will see a very long series of numbers, and windows will label it as your IPv6 address.
